Have you heard of Belogradchik rocks in Bulgaria? This is a natural phenomenon in Northwestern Bulgaria. Let’s see it together with other natural sites in a 3 day tour. We will drive together to our birthplace, Belogradchik. This is a small town in Northwestern Bulgaria at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. Its name means “small white town”.
Sightseeing of Belogradchik rocks
Most of all, the town is famous for the Belogradchik rocks. These are unique red rock formations with various shapes. During the sightseeing tour, you will feel the energy of the Belogradchik rocks. In 2008 they got nomination to be listed among the 7 World Wonders of Nature. You will enjoy the beautiful nature of the Balkan Мountains, visit 3 unique caves and live close to the nature for the next 3 days.
Caves in Northwestern Bulgaria
Furthermore, we will visit three caves. Ledenika cave is near the city of Vratsa. The cave is about 300m long and contains ten separate halls. The biggest one is the Concert Hall. You need to go through the Passage of Sinners to reach it. Only those with pure heart can pass through it. Once the cave was full of water but now there is only a small lake – the Lake of Wishes. The legend says that if you dip your hand in the cold water and make a wish, the wish will come true.
The next cave is Venetsa cave. It is open for visitors since June 2015. This place is a natural monument because of its exceptional colored formations and ice crystals. They look like flowers, animals and other figures. (see the photo in the gallery of the tour)
And the third cave is the Magura cave. It is located close to the town of Vidin. The drawings in the cave show society events that had occurred in the Magura cave: religious ceremonies, hunting scenes and images of Gods. All this is unique for the Balkans. In 1984 the site was included in UNESCO’s tentative list of World Heritage.
The town of Vidin: Baba Vida Fortress
Lastly, we will reach our natural border with Romania in Vidin. We will have a walk along the Danube River. Vidin’s main touristic sight is Baba Vida fortress. It dates to the period from the 10th to the 14th century. The fortress is located in a park on the bank of the river. We used to live here until 18 year old and we will be happy to show you our hometown. This part of Bulgaria is a hidden treasure of the country. Let’s explore it together.

Tour Reviews
So anyone seeking an experience in Bulgaria that is something different than Sofia and city sightseeing, this tour is great! There was such a nice variety of things to see and do. We began by walking through the old mountain fortress in the rocks at Belogradchik, but also saw a musical performance in the peaks that evening. (The Sofia National Opera & Ballet has outdoor shows during the summer called, “Opera of the Peaks.” Ask the tour guides about it.) The following day we visited caves with pre-historic drawings on the walls, followed by a tour of Vidin – a city on the Danube River. In Vidin, we saw everything from a medieval fortress to old communist industrial areas. Not to mention, the drive between Belogradchik and Vidin offers a wonderful flavor of the Bulgarian countryside.
I not only recommend this tour, but plan on doing it again — and seeing another show at the “Opera of the Peaks.”
Thank you Beni and Tsveti! -Tim F., U.S.A.
