Panagyurishte is a small historical town in Southern Bulgaria.

Panagyurishte gold treasure

First of all, in one of the museums we will see the Panagyurishte gold treasure. It is the most famous one of the Thracian gold treasures. This ancient gold has made Bulgaria famous worldwide. The Thracians are an ancient civilization who lived in our territory millenniums ago. The Thracians were very skilled craftsmen. And they believed in life after death. When somebody died, they dressed in white clothes and had a feast. They loved drinking wine and they believed that by drinking wine they get spiritual. When a Thracian king died, he was buried with a rich ritual. He was buried in a grave, called a Thracian tomb, together with his wife, the horse, the dog and the gold treasure. Later archaeologists found some of these gold treasures and today the treasures travel abroad.

April Uprising of 1876

Furthermore, Panagyurishte is also the birthplace of Rayna Knyaginya. She is a Bulgarian teacher and revolutionary who sewed the flag of the April Uprising of 1876. This Uprising is very important for Bulgarian history. It had a crucial role in the Liberation of Bulgaria from the Ottomans. The Ottomans stopped the April Uprising brutally. This provoked the Great Powers to help Bulgaria. As a result, thanks to the help of Russia, on 3 March 1878 Bulgaria got its freedom. The period of 500 years of Ottoman domination ended.

Let’s celebrate the Liberation of Bulgaria together. At the same time, we will learn more about the patriots from Panagyurishte and the region.
