Surva is an International Festival of Masquerade Games held in Pernik, Bulgaria. This is the biggest event of this type not only in Bulgaria but also on the Balkans. Surva promotes ancient Bulgarian customs that are still alive today. They are an important part of the Bulgarian folklore tradition. Participants from Bulgaria and abroad will show us their unique traditions, masks and costumes, music and dances. Surva festival takes place on the last weekend of January annually.

Today the town of Pernik has a population of 93 000 people. The oldest traces of human existence in the area date back to the 6th millennium BC. Historians estimate that Pernik was founded roughly at the same time as Troy.
Masquerade rituals come from old pagan times and are still alive in the Bulgarian folklore tradition. According to the tradition, participants put on scary masks and costumes to shoo away the bad powers. As the end of January is the coldest time in our winter, dancers often have some rakia to warm up before their performance.
