Surva, the International Festival of the Masquerade Games held in the town of Pernik, is the biggest event of this type not only in Bulgaria but also on the Balkans. It promotes ancient Bulgarian customs that are still alive today. These are an important part of the Bulgarian folklore tradition. Participants from Bulgaria and abroad will show us their unique traditions, masks and costumes, songs and dances in the streets of Pernik.

Today the town of Pernik has a population of 93 000 people. The oldest traces of human existence in the area date back to the 6th millennium BC. Historians estimate that Pernik was founded roughly at the same time as Troy.
Masquerade rituals come from old pagan times and are still alive in the Bulgarian folklore tradition. According to the tradition, participants put scary masks and costumes to shoo away the bad powers.
Bulgarian masquerade games are mainly held during the holidays between Christmas and Easter. Join our one day trip to Surva festival. More information at email@example.com.
